Lolla 2007!

Lolla 2007 - Grant Park Chicago

Lolla '07 has now come & gone. I won't go on & on ... I can say, having gone to Bonnaroo this year, Lolla is by far more organized, cleaner, easier and well, better looking (at least because everyone here was clothed). I missed a couple of sets due to poor time management but heard that the Black Keys and Tokyo Police Club were fantastic. Saturday, the Hold Steady and Spoon were once again, my favorites. High energy, connected with the crowd, rain coming down ... Smashed between those two sets were The Yeah Yeah Yeah's. Man, what a sight! I didn't realize what a crazy chick that Karen O. is ...capes, masks, black laces running up her leg, painted foreheads and smeared makeup. It was like the anti-supergirl.

Surprises for me were Paolo Nutini, the Kings of Leon and TV on the Radio - liked all more than I thought I would. Disappointments were PB&J - their set was riddled with sound problems and ended after a song or two. And I may get stoned for saying this but the Polyphonic Spree did not please me. The speakers were jacked up too high, I felt like I was listening to a dog whistle. Modest Mouse lacked some energy, too. Sound was good, but that was about it ... we headed to My Morning Jacket instead - which was a lot better. Festival Headliner Pearl Jam brought in the crowds, and they sounded good. If I were a big PJ fan, I'd have been super excited I'm sure. It really was a great few days, and I may be biased but having the cityscape serve as a backdrop makes for some beautiful scenery. Now next year, could Ryan Adams please come back?

three days of rocking out and being able to return to your own bed each night. sounds perfect.

how would you rate the overall experience compared to other years?

well, i only went last year and that was on a day pass. so in comparison, this is WAY better! i will say, it helps to go with someone or at least meet someone for part of the time ... i think that's why saturday night was so fun. nonetheless, this is a part of the city now...and i hope in a few years it's much like how austin views ACL. the midwest doesn't have another festival quite like this and truly, i think chicago is such a great great place for it...where else can you step foot off festival grounds, into a taxi and be at a neighborhood bar in minutes?!!
